The Bumbobi – Lwakhakha Road (44.5 km) is located in Mbaie and Manafwa districts starting at Bumbobi just outside Mbale Municipality. The existing road is a Class C gravel road. The works comprise upgrading of existing gravel road between Bumbobi and Lwakhakha (44.5 km) from gravel to bitumen standard.

The completed road have an overall carriageway width of 7.0 metres (2×3.5 m lanes) with Double. Bituminous Surface Treatemen (DBST), and 1.5 m wide shoulders in rural areas and 2.0 m wide in urban areas. Additional 3.5 m wide parking lanes are provided in built up areas. The pavement for Bumbobi to Lwakhakha will comprise:

  • 30 mm – Double Surface Treatment;
  • 125 mm – Granular Base (Graded Crushed Stone)
  • 175 mm (Cement Stabilized Base (Gravel)
  • 550 mm – Improved Subgrade layer to be added in locations where sub-grade is less than 15% CBR.

The project includes the construction of 2 main bridges, one of them at the Lwakhakha border with Kenya.
