The Baricho immediate works (financed throughWaSSIP-AF) are now complete and, the total production capacity of Barichosystem has increased by 22,000m3/day to a total production of 112,000m3/day.Out of this volume, around 60,000m3/day will be for Mombasa city (through theMombasa pipeline) and the remaining 58,000m3/day will be for Malindi, Kilifiand Gongoni (through the Malindi pipeline). However, the existing actualcapacity of Baricho-Kakayuni line is only 30,000m3/day and also the existingKakuyuni tank capacity is only 1,250m3. To ensure that the targeted three towns(Malindi, Kilifi and Gongoni) are served adequately, a new additionalBaricho-Kakuyuni pipeline is proposed (Second Baricho/Kakuyuni Pipeline)together with a new Kakuyuni reservoir will be designed and constructed to takecare of the additional 28,000 m3/day produced water in Baricho plant. This newsecond Baricho Kakuyuni pipeline will have the associated electromechanicalequipment (HLPs and Switchgear etc.) at Baricho plant incorporated.  These additional switchgear equipment will behoused in a new pump house but after the consultant has checked whether theexisting pump house can accommodate the new electromechanical equipment.

In addition, thecapacity of the transmission pipelines (Kakuyuni/Kilifi and Kakuyuni/Ganda) isinadequate and this capacity needs to be augmented in this study. Thereforeit’s expected that additional parallel pipelines from Kakuyuni to Kilifi andGanda will be designed and constructed to meet the projected demands in theWater Distribution Master Plan.
